How I can help

Assessments

An assessment is a key milestone for a child and their parents. It will bring clarity to the issues the child is facing as well as an understanding of their strengths and skills. It forms the basis for forward planning whether that includes all or any of the following: individual therapy sessions, modifications to the child's environments, implementation of helpful strategies at home and school, programmes for home and school, family therapy sessions, etc.

The assessment starts with the gathering of background information. On the basis of the information I select appropriate assessment tools. I am qualified to use a wide range of well researched assessments to look at functional skills, sensory integration, movement coordination, motor skills, developmental levels, play, praxis, etc. These include the Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests, the "gold standard" test of sensory

integration and praxis). This is not available

through the NHS in Scotland. I also use

observations and my 25+ years' experience of

working with children and young people.

The assessment may take place over two sessions. This may include a home and/or school/nursery visit. You then have an opportunity to discuss the detailed report with me and the recommendations in it.

An assessment report is a very useful tool for parents. It is a document that can be discussed with a playgroup, nursery or school to support planning for your child. It can also be shared with other professionals who may be working with your child.
